Food and Behavior

Resources and References for Food and Behavior

  1. Handout for Food & Behavior presentation by Sally Hara, MS, RD, CSSD, CDE (updated 2/2011)
  2. Information on MRT Food Sensitivity TestingThis is not a standardized laboratory test and is only available through certified providers who are specially trained to guide patients through the stepwise process of utilizing their individual test results to clearly identify safe and problematic foods & chemicals. At ProActive Nutrition, our registered dietitians work with patients to develop food plans that avoid problem foods & chemicals, yet are balanced, nutritious, and realistic for the individual’s lifestyle.  ProActive Nutrition has found the MRT food sensitivities test to be a useful tool to identify sensitivities, and we do have the test available for our patients.  However,  for ethical reasons, we have chosen not to add any handling fees to the cost of the test itself.  Click here to see test results for a sample patient.

  1. Eating for Autism by Elizabeth Strickland:  One of the few credible books on nutrition for Autism and ADHD
  2. Signs, Symptoms and Background Information on Sensory Integration .  this is a great resource for information on sensory integration disorders (helpful for parents, school staff, and more).
  3. Sensory Integrative Dysfunction in Young Children . Another great resource defining sensory dysfunctions and how they can manifest in school and affect learning. (I’ve given copies of this to school staff to help them understand that many observed behaviors are ultimately tied to sensory issues.)
  4. ADHD Diet Plan Gets Mixed Reviews. Article discussing recent research linking diet to ADHD. Research is finally starting to support that diet can significantly impact ADHD and other behavior disorders. It could take a while to convince the skeptics though. I know… I used to be one 😉
  5. Kirkman labs. supplement company specializing in hypoallergenic nutritional supplements for children with special needs and people with food & chemical sensitivities.  The probiotic I most often recommend in ProBio Gold from this company.
