Ride Your Socks Off!

Being on the streets is bad enough. Being on the streets with worn or wet socks is even worse.

A pair of clean, dry socks can mean more than you know to someone who spends most of their days outside and on their feet.

 

Here’s the goal:

By Oct 20th we need your help to fill 8 containers with new or gently used socks for the Seattle Union Gospel Mission. The Seattle IC3 cycling team will then ride ALL of the donated socks on our bikes from Bothell to the UGM men’s shelter in downtown Seattle to be distributed to people in the Puget Sound area who are in need of clean dry socks for the winter. A package of tube socks is perfect, but any and all socks are welcome.   More……

 Ride to Cure Diabetes

This year Sally Hara will again ride 109 miles in El Tour de Tucson to help raise money for diabetes research. She has had the privilege of training with a local JDRF (Juvinile Diabetes Research Foundation) cycling group for the past 2 years, which consists of type 1 diabetic athletes and their supporters. What an amazing group of people! Please consider sponsoring Sally Hara on this 100+ mile bicycle ride as a means of donating to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s search for a cure for type 1 (juvenile) diabetes.

Fall 2011 Workshop for Type 1 Diabetes

Tuesday, October 25th,   2011, 6:00 PM;   REI Redmond, WA

 

Taking a step back from  sport-specific discussions, we’re talking about “Food Glorious Food” with  Sally Hara, CDE and sports nutritionist, and Jennifer Okemah, CDE and  registered dietitian. Come join us for a lively discussion of Type 1 Diabetes  and management strategies for holiday food, postprandial lows, different  digestive rates of food to name a few.

This FREE workshop  is open to all adult Type 1 athletes (ages 16 and up), casual to  professional. • Space  is limited. • Registration  is required.

Panelists:

§   Sally Hara, MS, RD, CSSD,  CDE – Founder ProActive Nutrition.  Uniquely qualified to work with our group, Sally is a Certified Diabetes  Educator as well as a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics. She  loves to cycle, analyze data, and talk about nutrition. Participating with SDGNW since its inception.

§   Jennifer Okemah, MS, RD, BC-ADM, CDE – Program coordinator for a nationally accredited  diabetes program in Monroe, WA. She is a registered dietitian, certified diabetes  educator, and board certified in advanced diabetes management. She has been  the lead RD for ADA in Washington State for the past 5 years. She is an annual speaker at  the Diabetes Expo, a provider at diabetes camp for children, panelist for  family retreat as well as national advocate for diabetes funding for cure and  prevention. In her spare time, she  manages multiple boys lacrosse teams from youth through high school. She enjoys hiking, running and cycling. She lives in  Mukilteo with her husband, 2 teenage boys, 2 dogs and a cat named  “Jeff”.

  Tour

On August 3rd,2011 Fit by Nature author John Colver set off from Seattle on his bike for a cross-country tour to promote his new book and see first hand how people across the country exercise. He arrived at Yorktown, Virginia on October 11th completing a coast to coast traverse of The United States. He will continue his journey with a route that takes him back across the country via southern states then up the Pacific coast states returning to Seattle in mid to late November.
